  • Second-generation Atlas builds on the success of the original with bolder design, smarter tech, and premium features where they matter most
  • All-new modern sheet metal meets a completely reimagined cabin with real wood décor and ambient lighting as standard, with available 15-inch infotainment, Nappa leather, and massaging front seats
  • More family-friendly features are standard than any Atlas before, including power tailgate, rear sunshades, dual wireless charging, and voice control
  • New front center airbag helps to enhance safety, while the standard IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite adds upgrades
  • New MQB evo platform preserves spacious third row, generous cargo room

Updated 2.0-liter EA888 Evo5 turbocharged engine offers more power, and is anticipated to provide better fuel economy than the previous model“When we first launched Atlas in 2017, we delivered the space and style the SUV market was missing; practical, well‑designed, and unmistakably Volkswagen,” said Kjell Gruner, president and CEO, Volkswagen of America. “The all‑new 2027 Atlas brings more of what matters: a stronger design, smarter technology, increased power, and a premium feel where it matters most.”

All-new sheet metal and redesigned front and rear lighting give the 2027 Atlas a more premium look. At the front, double stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, and a powerful hood project a confident face to the world. Double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge are standard on all but the base trim, making it instantly recognizable, day or night.

Stronger proportions and sleeker surfacing are seen best in the profile. A dynamic and sharp theme line runs along the upper body sides, augmented by strong fenders, and sculpted side sills. Illuminated door handles are available, as are puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern. At the back, the spoiler is more pronounced, and the tailgate lies flush with the rear bumper, for a more modern shape. The cross-body taillight design mirrors the lighting signature in the front, and standard dynamic turn signals with three animations add a premium feel.

New wheels and exterior colors elevate the design upgrades. All trims except the base model receive new aluminum-alloy wheel designs in 20- and 21-inch diameters, with machined alloy and black finishes available; the entry Atlas rides on 18-inch rims. Three sophisticated new colors join the Atlas palette for 2027: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone.

Inside, the cabin is completely reimagined and elevated with a more modern design and upscale materials. A bold loop unifies the cockpit with one strong, architectural statement. Everything flows with purpose, from displays to vents and lighting. The shift lever moves to the steering column to free up space in a large center console, designed to handle family life. Revised door handles make the door panels look more premium.

High-quality soft-touch surfaces abound, with real wood décor featured on all models and two leather choices available. The interior features extensive uses of contrasting colors and stitching. Three interior color palettes are available—an airy pebble grey, a moody black and dark grey, and an all-new deep wine. Leatherette remains standard on base models, while the top two trims offer Varenna leather and Nappa leather.

Innovating ambient lighting sets sophisticated tone. A 10-color setup is standard, and the top two trims receive 30 color options; a standard “Atmospheres” feature coordinates lighting and audio settings. On most trims, the ambient lighting flows through the dashboard loop and front footwells. The top two trims add an organic spiral pattern to the dash, which twists and morphs through innovative perforated backlit door panels in the first and second rows.

More family-friendly features are standard than any Atlas before. New standard features include a power liftgate, rear sunshades, auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear park distance control. The base Atlas upgrades to a 9-speaker audio system, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon® premium audio system is available on the top trim.

To make the whole family more comfortable, there are new air vents in the B pillars along with available second-row seat ventilation. Drivers benefit from a revised 12-way ergonomic seat with enhanced four-way lumbar support on all models. On upper trims, drivers get thigh support and four-way massage is available on both front seats. As in the outgoing model, captain’s chairs and a panoramic sunroof are available on nearly all trims.

Smarter tech enhances the everyday experience. The large free-standing infotainment screen is 15 inches on all but the base trim, which gets a 12.9-inch display. All Atlas models feature Volkswagen’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable gauge cluster. A new Driver Experience Dial in the center console controls audio volume, drive modes, and the Atmospheres feature. The console also has room for two cellphones to charge side by side with updated Qi2 wireless charging; seven USB-C ports are available throughout the vehicle as well. A one-year trial subscription of Premium Speech, Volkswagen’s generative AI-enabled voice assistant, helps with natural language tasks.

Safety and driver assistance features are improved to help protect what matters most. A new front center airbag brings the total airbags to seven, and the new Atlas features refinements to the standard suite of IQ.DRIVE® driver assistance technology. The Travel Assist feature, which enables semi-automated hands-on driving capability, has been upgraded to allow for driver-initiated lane change, and Emergency Assist can now guide the vehicle to the side of the road if it senses a medical emergency. Front and rear Park Distance Control has been added to the base trim, and the latest version of Park Assist Plus is added to the top trim.

The second-generation Atlas maintains its hallmark utility and improves performance for everyday capability. The new 2027 Atlas is built on the upgraded MQB Evo architecture, to maintain its spacious interior—particularly the generous third row. The vehicle is about an inch longer than the outgoing Atlas, and the width, wheelbase, and height remain the same.

It is fitted with the new EA888 evo5 turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI® engine, producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. While power improves—13hp more than the outgoing vehicle and the most ever seen on an Atlas model—the new engine is anticipated to provide better fuel economy than the previous model. Towing capacity remains at 5,000 pounds for models with a factory-installed trailer hitch, and payload is unchanged from the outgoing model. As in the previous generation, an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, and Volkswagen’s 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup. A hybrid variant is planned to arrive with the midcycle refresh.

The Atlas family is hugely important to Volkswagen’s lineup and represents the brand’s commitment to assembly in the United States. The seven-seat Atlas and five-seat Atlas Cross Sport vehicles comprised 30% of sales in 2025, and are proudly assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Volkswagen employs about 4,000 people.

Further details, specifications, and pricing will be announced ahead of the launch this fall.
